In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
쿠빌라이 칸은 도원경에
웅장한 아방궁을 지으라고 명령하였다.
거기에는 거룩한 강 알프가
사람이 헤아릴 길 없는 깊은 동굴을 통하여
태양이 비치지 않는 바다로 흘러 가고 있었다.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
그리하여 5마일의 두 배에 이르는 기름진 땅에는
성벽과 탑이 허리띠처럼 둘러싸여 있었고
굽이쳐 흐르는 시냇물에 비쳐 반짝이는 정원도 있었다.
숲은 언덕 만큼이나 오래 묵었고
세상 떠난 성인들과 더불어 사랑하는,
양지바른 녹지가 흩어져 있었다
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
그러나 오! 삼나무 숲을 가로질러 초록 언덕을
비스듬히 기울어진 크나큰 신비를 지닌 대지의 균열이여!
황량한 곳이로다! 창백한 달빛 아래 요괴인 애인을
그리워하여 우는 여인이 출몰한 장소와도 같이
신성하면서도 마력을 지닌 장소다!
마치 대지가 가쁜 숨을 쉬며 헐떡이듯이
이 틈새로부터 계속 소란스럽게 용솟음 치면서
거대한 분수가 시시각각 뿜어 나오고 있었다
그 빠르게 끊어졌다 이어지는 분출의 한가운데
사방으로 흩어지는 우박과 같이, 또는 도리깨를
맞고 흩어지는 곡식단의 낱알처럼
춤추듯 튀고 있는 바위 속에서 단번에 그리고 끊임없이
거룩한 강으로 물을 계속 흘러 내고 있었다.
마치 미로와 같이 구불구불한 5마일을
이 거룩한 강은 숲과 골짜기를 흘러서
사람이 헤아릴 길 없는 동굴에 이르러
생명없는 대양으로 소란하게 가라앉았다.
그 떠들썩한 소리 속에서 쿠빌라이 칸은
전쟁을 예언하는 조상의 목소리를 들었다.
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
환락의 궁정 건물의 그림자는
물결 한가운데 떠서 흘렀고,
거기 솟아나는 샘물과 동굴로부터
뒤섞인 가락이 들려오고 있었다.
그것은 진귀스러운 취향의 기적이었다.
얼음의 동굴의 있는 햇빛 쨍쨍 비치는 환락의 궁전!
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me
That with music loud and long
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
거문고를 든 아가씨를
나는 일찍이 환상에서 보았다.
그것은 아비시니아의 소녀였었다.
그 소녀는 거문고를 연주하면서
아보라 산에 관하여 노래하고 있었다.
내 마음 속에 그 소녀의
음악과 노래를 되살아나게 할 수 있다면

그의 불타듯 번쩍이는 눈, 그의 나부끼는 머리카락
그의 주위를 세 차례 돌고서
성스러운 두려움을 느끼며 눈을 감아라!
그는 꿀이슬을 먹었고
낙원의 우유를 마시고 취하였다.
